How I Work
Understand what is getting in the way.......Then move forward.
You may already know what you want.
More confidence. A new direction, better balance, stronger performance, a different career, a retirement that feels right for you or simply the freedom to stop holding yourself back.
Sometimes the next step is obvious........Sometimes it is not. .....and sometimes you know exactly what you want but still cannot seem to move towards it.
That is where my work begins.
I help you understand where you are now, what you want instead, what may be getting in the way, and what needs to happen next.
I don’t start with a formula
Two people can have exactly the same goal and be held back for completely different reasons.
One person may need confidence.
Another may fear judgement.
Someone else may feel guilty about putting themselves first, struggle with imposter syndrome, resent the life they have created, or pull back just as opportunities begin to appear.
That is why I do not push people through a standard coaching programme.
I begin by understanding you.
What do you want?
What is happening now?
What keeps getting in the way?
What have you already tried?
What happens just before you lose momentum, hesitate, pull back or change your mind?
From there, we work out what actually needs attention.
Experience matters
After more than twenty years of working with people, much of what I do involves recognising patterns quickly.
That comes from experience, intuition, psychological understanding, neuroscience, specialist training and knowing what questions to ask.
The same behaviour can have very different drivers.
Procrastination may be fear.
Lack of confidence may be fear of judgement.
Self-sabotage may be guilt about success.
Feeling stuck may be resentment, uncertainty, conflicting priorities, loss of direction or simply no longer knowing what you genuinely want.
The skill is not only recognising what may be happening.
It is knowing what to do with that information.
Looking back.....only when it helps you move forward
InnerShift is forward-facing.
We do not spend time analysing your past simply for the sake of understanding it.
But sometimes what is happening today makes much more sense when we understand where a pattern began.
An earlier experience may still influence how you make decisions, respond to pressure, approach success, judge yourself or decide what you are allowed to want.
When that matters, we look at it.
When it does not, we do not.
The purpose of looking back is always to help you move forward.
From understanding to action
Insight matters.
But coaching also needs movement.
Once we understand what you want and what may be getting in the way, we turn that understanding into action.
That may mean:
-
setting clear goals
-
making decisions
-
identifying the next step
-
building confidence
-
challenging avoidance
-
changing unhelpful patterns
-
creating better boundaries
-
trying new behaviours
-
reviewing progress
-
staying accountable
-
adjusting the plan when something is not working
The aim is not simply to have an interesting conversation.
It is to help you make things happen.
The InnerShift philosophy
People are different
There is no universal route to confidence, success, fulfilment or change.
The same goal can require a completely different approach for two different people.
Understand before you act
Action matters, but good action begins with good understanding.
Pushing harder at the wrong problem usually creates more frustration.
The obvious problem is not always the real one
People often arrive saying:
“I need more confidence.”
“I procrastinate.”
“I self-sabotage.”
“I don’t know what I want.”
Those descriptions may be accurate.
The important question is what is driving them.
Look back when it helps you move forward
The past matters when it is still influencing the present.
We use it when it helps us understand what is keeping you stuck today.
Then we move forward.
Insight needs action
Understanding yourself can be powerful.
But coaching also means deciding, doing, testing, learning and moving.
Follow what works
I do not force a programme, technique or plan simply because that was where we expected to go.
If something is not helping, we reassess.
The work follows what is actually happening for you.
The technique matters. Knowing how to use it matters more.
I draw on a range of specialist approaches including BWRT, HeartMath, NLP, hypnotherapy, TFT, IFS and mindfulness alongside coaching.
I do not use every approach with every person.
Some people need challenge and accountability.
Some need clarity.
Some need confidence.
Others know exactly what they want but are still being held back by an automatic emotional response or an old psychological pattern.
My job is to understand what actually needs attention and use the approach most likely to help.
What moving forward can look like
For one person, it may mean making a career move they have postponed for years.
For another, it may mean creating a retirement that feels like their own.
It could mean becoming more confident in leadership, performing better under pressure, starting a business, making a difficult decision, creating better boundaries or finally putting themselves first without guilt.
For some people, the goal is clarity.
For others, confidence, performance, purpose, freedom or fulfilment.
There is no single destination.
The aim is to help you understand what has been getting in the way and move towards the future you actually want.
Who I work with
I often work with thoughtful, capable people who know they are ready for something different but cannot quite seem to make the shift.
That includes:
-
professionals, leaders and business owners
-
people navigating career or life transitions
-
people approaching or adjusting to retirement
-
people struggling with imposter syndrome or self-doubt
-
people experiencing burnout or feeling stuck
-
people held back by guilt, resentment or fear of judgement
-
people who want stronger performance or greater confidence
-
people who have plenty of insight but need help turning it into change
You do not need to arrive with everything worked out.
Working out what matters is part of the process.
Start with a conversation
If you know you want something to change but are not quite sure how to move forward, we can start there.
A 30-minute conversation gives us the opportunity to talk about where you are now, what you want next, what may be getting in the way and whether working together feels right.
